Travis Kelce has seen a monstrous decline in his stats in 2024, going from being a consistent thousand-yarder in his prime to possibly not hitting even 900. But even amidst this diminution, he is still the Kansas City Chiefs' most reliable receiving threat, easily leading even the wide receivers.

Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers was a rematch of the time when he became the most prolific pass-catcher in frachise history, surpassing Hall-of-Famer Tony Gonzalez. And he entered it with a personal goal in mind: hit 700 yards for the season, his eleventh straight time doing so in his career.

Did Kelce accomplish that task? And more importantly, did he help the Chiefs clinch the AFC West for the ninth straight time?

Travis Kelce's stats tonight vs. Chargers

These were Travis Kelce's stats on Sunday:

  • Receptions: 5
  • Receiving yards: 45
  • Touchdowns: 0

It was another day of him not hitting even 50 yards, but such a paucity in performance did not ultimately matter. Patrick Mahomes did what he does best: torment defenses with drawn-out drives. It did not even need to be his usual playmakers scoring; especially in the first half, all he usually did was ensure that Matthew Wright had enough distance to work with.

While most teams, whether contending or not, lean on one or two monstrously dominant weapons to propel them, the Chiefs prefer to keep their opponents guessing. That is how they have managed to remain mostly unbeatable (save for the Buffalo Bills): shuffle the cast. One day Xavier Worthy dominates; the next it is DeAndre Hopkins

Kelce, especially at his current age, has morphed into just one of many cogs in that machine. 637 yards looks low when compared to his seven straight seasons of at least 1,000 yards; but as long as those years translate into wins, there is no reason why he should not be considered a contributor anymore.
