Trey Lance

Trey Lance is an American professional basketball player for the Dallas Cowboys. He was born on May 9th, 2000 in Marshall Minnesota. Trey Lance began to play football at an early age. Football ran in the blood of the family with Lance’s father being a former cornerback in the Canadian Football League.

Trey Lance attended high school at Marshall High School, where he discovered his ability as a dual-threat quarterback. He was equally good at making pass plays and rush plays. This trait made him a top prospect in the eyes of scouts.

After having a good high school career, Lance wanted to commit to playing at the University of Minnesota. He eventually committed to play college-level football at the North Dakota State University (NDSU).

Lance played just two games in his freshman year of college. In 2019, he was named the starting quarterback for the team after which he led them to win the NCAA Division 1 Championship Game. He was named MVP for his impeccable performance. During his time at NDSU, Lance secured many records and accolades. He completed the 2019 season with 0 interceptions and shattered the record for most number of pass attempts without interceptions in NCAA history. He won the Walter Payton Award and the Jerry Rice Award, giving him national recognition.

The 2021 college football season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. By the time the 2021 season started, Lance had decided to declare for the NFL draft.

Which Year Was Trey Lance Drafted Into The NFL?

Trey Lance declared for the 2021 NFL draft and was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft as the 3rd pick by the San Francisco 49ers. His rookie season did not see Lance getting too much playing time as he served as the backup to Jimmy Garoppolo. He completed the season playing 6 games. In those 6 games, he recorded 603 passing yards and 5 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 168 yards and scored 1 rushing touchdown.

The following year turned out to be worse for Lance as he suffered a leg injury which led to him missing rest of the season. He only started two games in the season where he recorded 194 passing yards, 0 touchdowns, 67 rushing yards and 0 rushing touchdowns.

The expectations with which the 49ers brought in Try Lance did not materialized and Brock Purdy's emergence in 2022 led to him getting traded to Dallas Cowboys in 2023. As of early August 2024, Dak Prescott is entering his last season with the Dallas Cowboys with no long term extension done which provides a path for Trey Lance to become a future successor at the QB position in Dallas. But as of early August, he is in a quarterback battle with Cooper Rush for the backup spot.
