Tyler Allgeier was supposed to be the Atlanta Falcons' running back of the future when he was drafted in 2022. As a rookie, he certainly proved his worth by rushing for over a thousand yards – an impressive performance for a fifth-rounder.

But his team was not exactly among the best, even in a weak NFC South, where they finished last. So the following year, they drafted another running back in Bijan Robinson, who eventually surpassed him in the depth chart.

Here is a look at the two men's stats in 2023:

It is now 2024, and once again Allgeier is a backup after four games. In this role he has had just 166 rushing yards from 27 carries and no touchdowns to his name. Despite such a downgrade in importance, is he still someone to add to one's waiver wire heading into his fifth game of 2024?

A look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Falcons' Week 5 opponents, reveals a defense that could overwhelm Tyler Allgeier, making him unviable when assembling one's fantasy team.

Starting in the trenches, two of ends William Gholston, Logan Hall and Calijah Kancey flank nose tackle Vita Vea. These three could contain him as he looks to punch through the defensive scheme. And if he gets through, then he has to contend with a monstrous linebacking core of veteran Lavonte David, YaYa Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and KJ Britt.

The only solace he has is in the backfield, where the secondary is having some aftereffects of losing Carlton Davis to the Detroit Lions via trade. Jamel Dean has been good, but he is no Davis. And Antoine Winfield Jr., the man who was supposed to be the leader of the corps, has surprisingly played just a single game that he started. Instead, Todd Bowles has been experimenting with other players besides Jordan Whitehead – like sophomore Christian Izien and Tykee Smith.

Allgeier is someone to avoid adding to a waiver wire. The Falcons are more likely to either hand off to Robinson or feed Drake London, Darnell Mooney and Kyle Pitts in the air to bypass the front seven and overwhelm the secondary.
