The Commanders and the Eagles met in the NFC Championship for the 2024 NFL Season with both divisional rivals looking to make it to the Super Bowl.
For the Eagles, a win here would mean their second title game appearance in three years. Their performance this year has erased some of the hurt they faced in 2023. They began last season with an unbeaten record only to stumble into the playoffs and get knocked out in the Wild Card round. The addition of Saquon Barkley has made them one of the most explosive offenses in the league with Vic Fangio straightening out the defense.
For the Commanders, this was a chance to lay down a marker. They had defeated Philadelphia late in the season which saw them effectively lose the chance to secure the NFC top spot. Then they went on the road and defeated both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Lions, the eventual first seed, to make it here. Jayden Daniels has been playing at an MVP level despite being a rookie and getting to the Super Bowl would show how far they have come in a year.
This is how the action went down between the NFC East opponents.

Commanders vs. Eagles game summary
The Commanders began the game with the ball and Jayden Daniels showed that the occasion was not too big for him. He converted a couple of clutch fourth downs, with the rookie quarterback throwing and running with ease. However, the coaching staff decided that they needed to take the points on offer at the end of their first possession and kicked a field goal to make it 3-0 to Washington.
The Eagles, though, got their home fans singing and shouting on their very next snap. Jalen Hurts handed the ball to Saquon Barkley in their own half. The running back did the rest breaking through a couple of tackles and scoring a touchdown to make it 7-3 to Philadelphia.
Disaster struck for the visitors on their next possession after Dyami Brown fumbled the ball and Reed Blankenship recovered it. With Philadelphia now having the ball, they went down the field and did what everyone expected them to do. Saquon Barkley got handed the rock and he rushed in from four yards for his second touchdown in the first quarter.
Washington needed something and they got it with a field goal to open the second quarter. Their defense then got a crucial sack to force a field goal attempt over 50 yards, which Philadelphia missed to keep the score 14-6. The offense responded in kind, with Jayden Daniels throwing to Terry McLaurin for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed to make the score 14-12 to the home team.
With the score getting too close, Jalen Hurts needed to put the team on his back and he did so with a fourth-and-five conversion with a deep throw. That set them up in the red zone and a defensive pass interference call in the endzone saw them one yard from the goal line. A tush push made it 20-12 to the Eagles. A penalty against the Commanders' Lattimore sent Philadelphia back there for a two-point conversion attempt but the brotherly shove failed this time.
With 1:44 remaining, the visitors had the chance to tie this game before halftime with a deficit of just eight points. But a special teams fumble on the kickoff return gave the Eagles the ball back again in the red zone. Jalen Hurts then thought he had extended the lead with a rush into the endzone but it was called back for holding. Mike Sainristil, though, gave the advantage straight back to the home team with a hit on Saquon Barkley outside the bounds.
It set up a first-and-goal and after a couple of attempts by the running back, Jalen Hurts let it loose to connect with A.J. Brown. The conversion made it 27-12 to the Eagles.
Jayden Daniels managed to claw back some yards with his feet in the next possession and went out of bounds in the field goal range with 13 seconds remaining. Zach Ertz picked up another first down and stopped the clock with six seconds remaining and a field goal made it 27-15 at the break.
The Commanders came back out with a spring in their steps and they got a stop, forcing the Eagles off the field with a three-and-out. However, the Washington offense could not take advantage and they had to punt too, making it the second one of the half after none in the first.
This allowed Philadelphia to march down the field with runs by Saquon Barkley and throws to A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert. With so many offensive weapons to block, the visitors could do nothing as Jalen Hurts waltzed into the endzone to make it 34-15 for the Eagles.
Washington needed an immediate response and Jayden Daniels emulated his Philadelphia counterpart with a run into the endzone himself. A successful two-point conversion made it 34-23. Just as it looked like it might be a close game, the Commanders coughed up their third fumble of the night, Austin Ekeler guilty this time.
The Eagles responded with a touchdown in return after multiple encroachments saw them parked right on the goal line. After the officials threatened the visitors with a forced score due to intentional penalties, Jalen Hurts finally broke the plane to make it 40-23. A successful one-point conversion gave the home team an 18-point lead.
With Washington needing something special, the Philadelphia defense knew their opponents were going on it for every fourth down. A sack on the next possession turned the ball over on downs, giving Saquon Barkley the opportunity for his third rushing touchdown of the night. It made it 48-23 for the Eagles.
The game was nearly done on the next drive as Jayden Daniels tried to conjure up something special and ended up getting intercepted in the endzone. That was enough for Kenny Pickett to dome in for Philadelphia and Will Shipley replaced Saquon Barkley at running back. The latter kept up the rushing excellence for the home team and led the drive that culminated with him entering the endzone for his maiden touchdown. The conversion made it 55-23.
By this time, even the Commanders knew the game was over and Marcus Mariota came in as quarterback to take us to the two-minute warning. Nothing came out of that drive either and they turned it over on downs. The Eagles are now in the Super Bowl on the back of the most points ever scored in an NFL Conference match.
