Joe Milton led the New England Patriots in Week 18 - Source: Getty
The game between the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills had no meaning for playoff concerns, but it was still important for one reason: a loss for the Patriots would mean that they would hold the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. But that's not what happened.

It was a golden opportunity to try and test new things. Drake Maye, who had been questionable for the entire week, played just a few snaps before giving way for Joe Milton to take over as the quarterback for the day.
For the Bills, however, with the number two seed already guaranteed, there was also no reason to play its starters in a meaningless game, and Mitchell Trubisky took over.
Even with the win, head coach Jerod Mayo was fired from New England after just one season.

A win is rarely a bad thing in the NFL, but for New England, this triumph does not have a good taste. They improved from the first to the fourth overall position in the 2025 NFL Draft, missing out on what would likely be a great haul of picks from a team desperate to find a franchise quarterback.

Josh Allen did nothing more than play the very first offensive snap of the game to be considered the starter, but overall, it was Mitchell Trubisky doing the work. The backup put together a solid outing with no turnovers.

A great game from quarterback Joe Milton, who also took over quickly after Drake Maye played in the first series just to be named as the starter for the game. He made great throws and impressed during his time on the field, even if a win was not wanted.

Kayshon Boutte did not appear much during the year, but in the season finale, he made great connections with Milton. One of the key aspects for the Patriots to improve in 2025 is their group of pass catchers, and Boutte could have a role to play on the roster.

About the author
Henrique Bulio
Henrique Bulio is an NFL and College Football journalist at Sportskeeda and the Editor-in-Chief of Pro Football Brasil. He has a total 13 years of experience working in American Football, and playing quarterback at an amateur level in Brazil has given him a unique perspective of the game.
Henrique follows the Philadelphia Eagles closely due to Michael Vick's historic performance on MNF against the Washington Commanders in 2010. His all-time favorite player is Ed Reed; he believes that Reed is the greatest safety to ever play the game. Bill Belichick gets the nod as Henrique's favorite coach for coaching the Patriots to glory over two decades.
If Henrique were to be able to go back in time and watch one game, it would be Super Bowl XLIX, where the Patriots and the Seahawks played a complete, back-and-forth game that concluded with one of the biggest talking points in NFL history.
Technical deep dives are Henrique’s specialty, and he ensures never to use misleading words in his articles, since he himself consumes a lot of information off the web. He has had the privilege of interviewing Cairo Santos, Lamar Jackson, Jim Harbaugh, Sean McDermott, Bruce Arians, Matt LaFleur, among others.
Aside from football, Henrique likes to play poker and Counter-Strike.
