The Atlanta Falcons' experiment with Marcus Mariota ended on Tuesday when the team decided to release the quarterback. The 29-year-old lasted just one season with the Falcons and played in a mere 13 games.
Mariota led the Falcons to a 5-8 record as a starter but was benched for the final four games of the regular season. He finished his career in Atlanta, throwing for 2,219 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions, at a 61.3% pass completion rate.
He attempted more than 30 passes on just two occasions. The Falcons offense also never really looked threatening with Mariota as their signal-caller.
The quarterback's poor form and inability to bind Atlanta's attack is one of the biggest reasons why the team chose to move on from Mariota. However, some have suggested that Mariota's departure was because the Falcons wanted to free up space on their roster.

According to reports, Atlanta will save around $12 million in salary cap space with Mariota off the roster. The quarterback signed a two-year deal with the Falcons last offseason worth $18,750,000.
Considering Mariota's $2.5 million dead money hit, the move would bring Atlanta's total cap space over the $65-million mark before the new league year begins on March 15.
Where will Marcus Mariota play next season?
Marcus Mariota is now a free agent and there will be a host of teams keeping tabs on him. The quarterback has already played for three different NFL teams and has gained experience playing regular football as well.
However, it's unlikely that he will be able to get a starting role in most teams next season. Since Tom Brady won't be returning to the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be an option for Mariota.
The New York Jets are also looking to bring in a new quarterback in the offseason after Zach Wilson's struggles in 2022. It will be interesting to see whether Robert Saleh will look to gamble on Mariota.
Nonetheless, we will have to wait and see where Mariota ends up next season.
