Kancey was chosen for the first team by all five of the NCAA's official selectors, earning him the title of Unanimous All-America. He became the Panthers' first unanimous All-American since defensive tackle Aaron Donald in 2013. Only 15 times in 133 seasons of NCAA football have Pitt players been named Unanimous All-Americas (a total of 13 players have done so). Kancey was the only athlete in the nation to be chosen as a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy for the year's top defensive player in the country and interior lineman, respectively, in 2022, awarded the Atlantic Coast Conference's Defensive Player of the Year, joining Donald as the only other Pitt players to get the conference's top defensive honour. Calijah Kancey's career has advanced to the point where snaps versus a single blocker are now uncommon. A force that has been becoming stronger and stronger with each passing week is being tried to be contained by opposing offences, and the Pitt Panthers' finest defensive tackle is confronting as many precise protection schemes as possible. Kancey, however, views the additional coverage as an opportunity to free up plays for his teammates rather than a struggle. In one-on-one situations, he might end up with more sacks or tackles for loss, but he is willing to eat up offensive linemen if it makes it easier for his teammates to make plays.
Charlie Partridge, a defensive line coach, is also energised by that. He praised Kancey for his ability to handle the extra pressure and predicted that over time, as teams learn that pressure can come from anywhere on the Pitt front, Kancey will be given more room to create plays.
