What was Jim Nantz’s ‘adult film’ mistake all about? CBS announcer recalls tale involving Clint Eastwood

Jim Nantz has become a household name for sports fans. The iconic broadcaster is one of the best at phrasing play-by-play calls but has had his share of slip-ups in the past.

Only last month, Nantz opened up on his “career lowlight" that made him blush in front of legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood.

The 63-year-old was a guest on the Five Clubs podcast and was asked about his movie preferences. Although Nantz named a few animated films he watched with his children, the CBS announcer recalled an embarrassing moment at the PGA Tour event with Eastwood and said:

"I had, years ago, Clint Eastwood in the booth at Pebble Beach, as we had for 30 years. And Davis Love had just won the tournament; he shot 64 to come from way behind. And Davis — great friend, great pal — had told me one time that growing up, his favorite childhood actor was Clint Eastwood. And one of the reasons why is that the first time he ever went to see a movie, with his dad, was a Clint Eastwood movie.”

Nantz went on to the awkward position he found himself in and added:

"So we’re on camera, and I’m thanking Clint as we’re drawing near the end of the broadcast and he’s going to leave to go down to the green and give the trophy away. And I said, hey, by the way, before you leave, I just want you to know that you’re going to be presenting that trophy to Davis, and he’s a huge Clint Eastwood fan. In fact, the first adult film he ever saw in his life, you starred in."

Nantz concluded that he was quite mortified by the situation.

"And I didn’t know what I had said. I just about said it again with you guys, about how I hadn’t been to an adult film in a long time. Yeah, I felt the temperature in the tower drop about 20 degrees when Clint looked at me — I didn’t know what I said — he said, ‘I never made an adult film in my life.’ That’s not what I meant!”

Jim Nantz has worked on various sports telecasts, including the NFL, NBA, and PGA Tour for CBS since 1980s. Although he has a way with words, the announcer admitted that his conversation with Eastwood was one of the few moments in his career that left him red-faced.

Jim Nantz has been married twice. His first marriage to Ann-Lorraine Carlsen lasted nearly 26 years, but the couple divorced in 2009. He and Ann-Lorraine have a daughter together named Caroline.

Nantz then married Courtney Richards in June 2012 and the pair have two children together, a daughter, Finley Cathleen (born in March 2014), and a son Jameson (born in January 2016).
