The Pittsburgh Steelers secured their place in the postseason three weeks ago, but it remains unclear which seed they will finish in the AFC standings and who they will play in the postseason.

Coach Mike Tomlin's team appears to be struggling significantly in the last few weeks. They have lost three games in a row, dropped out of the top spot in the AFC North and seem to be hobbling into the playoffs after a 10-3 start to the season.

Coach Tomlin recently hinted that he wants his Pittsburgh team to get rid of the unpleasant taste associated with a three-game losing skid ahead of the playoffs. That goal can be accomplished on Saturday with a win over the Cincinnati Bengals, which would also provide the Steelers with needed motivation going into the postseason. This is especially necessary considering Tomlin's playoff record in past years.

Exploring Mike Tomlin's playoff record

After just one season as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, Mike Tomlin was hired as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007. Following Bill Belichick's departure from the New England Patriots last season, Tomlin has become the longest-serving active head coach in the league.

Tomlin guided Pittsburgh to Super Bowl triumph, winning Super Bowl XLIII in only his second season with the organization. Since then, though, the head coach hasn't exactly had much success in the postseason. He has an 8-10 overall postseason record with the Steelers.

The Steelers lost to the Buffalo Bills 31-17 in the Wild Card round of their most recent postseason trip in Jan. 2024.

Under Tomlin's leadership, the Steelers have advanced to the first round of the playoffs ten times, won two Super Bowls, played in three AFC Championship Games and competed in five Divisional Round games.

Mike Tomlin has gone almost two decades without a losing record

As an NFL head coach, Mike Tomlin has achieved a remarkable feat by finishing the season with a record of at least .500 for the 18th consecutive year. While he ended with 8-8 records in 2012, 2013 and 2019, Tomlin has maintained winning records in each of his other full seasons.

Tomlin can't end a season at .500 anymore due to the league's switch to a 17-game schedule in 2021, but that hasn't stopped him and his impressive streak. He kept the trend going by leading the squad to a 9-7-1 record that season.

They continued the run in 2022, finishing with a 9-8 record after winning seven of their final nine games. After finishing with a 10-7 record last season, the team swiftly went 9-3 in the first 12 games of the current campaign to ensure the streak would continue.
