For teams in the NFL, the trophy they play for year in and year out is the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which is presented to a team that wins the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl serves as the final game of every NFL season since 1966. The unique thing about the league’s championship game from the other major leagues in America is that the Super Bowl is a one-off game in which the winner takes all, whereas the other leagues generally feature a best-of-seven series in the final.

Teams yet to win the Super Bowl

As of February 2025, there remain twelve franchises that have not won a signle Super Bowl. These twelve franchises are as follows, as per Fox Sports:

  • Arizona Cardinals

  • Atlanta Falcons

  • Buffalo Bills

  • Carolina Panthers

  • Cincinnati Bengals

  • Cleveland Browns

  • Detroit Lions

  • Houston Texans

  • Jacksonville Jaguars

  • Los Angeles Chargers

  • Minnesota Vikings

  • Tennessee Titans

As per the above list, out of the 32 teams in the NFL, only 20 of them have won the Super Bowl atleast once in their franchise's history. Out of these twelve teams, four of them are yet to make the trip to the Super Bowl. These four franchises are the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, as reported by ESPN.

Teams which featured in the Super Bowl but do not have any rings

Leaving aside the four teams that have never made it to the biggest game in the sport, there are still eight franchises that have not won the Championship despite making at least one appearance, as of February 2025. Certain teams have had multiple attempts but have been unable to win it at the biggest stage of football.

Teams that have played in one Super Bowl

The Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Chargers, and Tennessee Titans have all been to the Super Bowl once each but failed to come away with a victory. The Chargers went to Super Bowl XXIX but lost to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 49-26. The Titans played in Super Bowl XXXIV and came up short against the then St. Louis Rams (now Los Angeles Rams). The Cardinals featured in Super Bowl XLIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers where they ended up losing 27-23.

Teams that have played in two Super Bowls

The Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers have each played in two Super Bowls but were unable to secure the victory, as of February 2025. The Falcons went to Super Bowls XXXIII and LI but lost to the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots respectively.

As for the Panthers, they played in Super Bowls XXXVIII and 50 but they too lost against the Patriots and Broncos respectively.

Teams that have played in three Super Bowls

The Cincinnati Bengals are the only team to have played in three Super Bowls but have come back empty-handed on each occasion. Each of their three losses was a close encounter as they lost 21-26, 16-20, and 20-23 respectively. The first two losses came against the 49ers, while their most recent loss came against the Rams in Super Bowl LVI.

Teams that have played in four Super Bowls

The Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills both hold the unwanted distinction of making it to four Super Bowls each but losing on all occasions. The Vikings had tremendous success during the first decade of the Super Bowl era making it to the big game in Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX, and XI. Unfortunately, they lost in all four against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Miami Dolphins, the Steelers, and the-then Oakland Raiders (now Las Vegas Raiders) respectively.

On the other, the Bills are the only franchise in the NFL to make four consecutive Super Bowls but to lose all of them. During the Jim Kelly era in the early 90s, they made their way to Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XVII, and XXVIII losing to the New York Giants, the then Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders), and the Dallas Cowboys on the last two occasions.

Teams with at least one Super Bowl

The list of teams that have won a Super Bowl is quite long, as 20 franchises have earned the respective honor. Several teams have also won multiple times and below is a table for the same, as of February 1st, 2025.
