The ultimate dream of any franchise in sports is to win the Championship at the end of the season. For teams in the NFL, the championship they are after year in and year out is the Super Bowl. The climax to the grueling season of gridiron football is one of the most watched events in the United States. What makes this league’s championship game unique from the other major leagues in America is that the Super Bowl is a one-off game in which the winner takes all, whereas the other leagues generally feature a best-of-seven series.
Therefore, the Super Bowl is nothing short of a grand stage. Thus being a part of a Super Bowl-winning team is a dream come true not only for the players but for everyone associated with the franchise from the coaches, to the front office staff, to the various personnel of the team, to the fans, etc. And while players and coaches may move on after a few years and jump from team to team, it is the team owners and the fans who are desperate for their franchise to see the Lombardi Trophy come home.
With that being said, let us take a look at all the teams that have met with the disappointment of never winning the Super Bowl despite fighting tooth and nail every passing year.
Teams yet to win the Super Bowl
As of the conclusion of the 2022 NFL season, there remain twelve franchises that are yet to taste the success of winning a ring. These twelve franchises are the following:
Arizona Cardinals
Atlanta Falcons
Buffalo Bills
Carolina Panthers
Cincinnati Bengals
Cleveland Browns
Detroit Lions
Houston Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars
Los Angeles Chargers
Minnesota Vikings
Tennessee Titans
As per the above list, we come to know that of the 32 teams in the NFL, only 20 of them have been able to enjoy the glory of winning the all-important Super Bowl at least once. What is even more interesting is the fact that of these twelve teams, four of them have yet to even make the trip to the Super Bowl. These four franchises are the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Texans and Jaguars are still the newest teams to be added to the NFL and therefore it is not as much of a knock on them as the Browns and the Lions who have been in the league for many years. Although both Cleveland and Detroit had success prior to the Super Bowl era by winning four NFL Championships each, both franchises have struggled to replicate it since 1966 (the start of the Super Bowl era).
Teams which featured in the Super Bowl but don’t have any rings
Leaving aside the four teams that have never made it to the biggest game in the sport, there are still eight franchises which have not won the Championship as of yet despite making at least one appearance. Having reached the last stage but missing out on the Lombardi Trophy is a heartbreak for everyone involved within the franchise as well as their respective fanbases. There are certain teams which have in fact had multiple attempts but have been unable to win even once.
Teams that have played in one Super Bowl
The Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Chargers, and Tennessee Titans have all been to the Super Bowl once each but failed to come away with a victory. The Chargers went to Super Bowl XXIX but lost to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 49-26 in a game in which Steve Young threw for 325 yards and had 6 passing touchdowns. The Titans played in Super Bowl XXXIV and came up short against the then St. Louis Rams (Los Angeles Rams) as Kurt Warner went ballistic and threw for 414 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Cardinals featured in Super Bowl XLIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers where they ended up losing a closely fought contest that finished 27-23.
Teams that have played in two Super Bowls
The Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers have each played in two Super Bowls yet the Lombardi Trophy still eludes them. The Falcons went to Super Bowls XXXIII and LI but lost them to the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots respectively. Against the Broncos, the Falcons had three interceptions while John Elway and Terrell Davis both had a big game. Against the Patriots, the Falcons completely collapsed after leading 28-3 with half of the third quarter over with.
As for the Panthers, they played in Super Bowls XXXVIII and 50 but they too lost against the Patriots and Broncos respectively. Super Bowl XXXVIII was a close contest but the Patriots won 32-29 while the Broncos' defense wreaked havoc on the Panthers.
Teams that have played in three Super Bowls
The Cincinnati Bengals are the only team to have played in three Super Bowls but have come back empty-handed on each occasion. Each of their three losses was a close encounter as they lost 21-26, 16-20, and 20-23 to the 49ers on the first two occasions and to the Rams more recently.
Teams that have played in four Super Bowls
The Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills both hold the unwanted distinction of making it to four Super Bowls each but having to endure a loss every time. The Vikings had tremendous success during the first decade of the Super Bowl era making it to the big game in Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX, and XI. Unfortunately, they lost by big margins against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Miami Dolphins, the Steelers, and the then Oakland Raiders (Las Vegas Raiders) respectively.
On the other, the Bills are the only franchise in the NFL to make four consecutive Super Bowls but to lose all of them. During the Jim Kelly era in the early 90s, they made their way to Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XVII, and XXVIII losing to the New York Giants, the then Washington Redskins (Commanders), and the Dallas Cowboys on the last two occasions.
Teams with at least one Super Bowl
The list of teams that have actually won a Super Bowl is quite big as twenty franchises can boast of having earned this honor. Several teams have also won multiple times and below is a table of the same.
Team | Super Bowl wins |
New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers | 6 |
Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers | 5 |
Green Bay Packers, New York Giants | 4 |
Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins/Commanders, Oakland/Los Angeles/Las Vegas Raiders, | 3 |
St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 2 |
Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks | 1 |
