Ocean Township, New Jersey native Kenny Pickett was born on June 6, 1998. He went to the University of Pittsburgh as a three-star prospect and won several awards and first-team honors. Overall from 2017-2021, he had a record of 32-17 as a quarterback and has completed 1,045 passes and 1,674 carries for 12,303 passing yards and 81 touchdowns. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 20th pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
However, two seasons later, in March 2024, Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for draft picks in 2024's third and fourth rounds and 2025's seventh round. During his time with the Steelers, he won the ACC Athlete of the Year in his debut season, and overall, he had a recorded 446 passes for 4,474 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, 50 sacks, six fumbles, and a starting quarterback record of 14-10 in a total of 25 games.
Kenny Pickett's Draft Pick
Kenny Pickett was the 20th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft.
The Pittsburgh Steelers became the first team to take a quarterback when they selected Kenny Pickett in the first round. As all the other franchises strengthened their squads by selecting a handful of defensive ends, cornerbacks, wide receivers, and offensive tackles, the Steelers were quite surprised that they were able to nab Pickett when their number was up.
One of the major concerns revolving around Pickett was his short hands, which measure only 8.5 inches. Many scouts and analysts perceived that he would be more prone to fumbling and that could have been the reason why most of the other franchises decided to pass up on him.
What record did Kenny Pickett break?
During his time with the Pittsburgh Panthers, Kenny Pickett broke two records during the 2021 ACC Championship game. The first record he broke was the most passing touchdowns record for the Panthers which was previously held by Dan Marino since 1982. Marino had 79 touchdowns for the Panthers in his four years whereas Pickett entered his final game tied with the same number of touchdowns. He then broke the record when he threw two touchdowns on his way to winning the title game and eventually finished his college career with 81 passing touchdowns.
The second record that Pickett broke was the ACC passing touchdowns record in a single season. This record with 41 touchdowns was held just recently by Deshaun Watson when he was playing for the Clemson Tigers in 2016. Pickett’s two passing touchdowns in the ACC Championship game elevated his tally to 42, handing him his second record in the same game.
Things have not changed much for the Steelers QB1 as after entering the NFL he has once again set new records in the professional league. Rushing for two touchdowns on his debut game, he became the first quarterback in the history of the league to ever do so. In addition to that, he also became the first rookie quarterback to throw a game-winning touchdown in the last minute of the fourth quarter in consecutive games achieving this feat in the week 16 and 17 games against the Las Vegas Raiders and the Baltimore Ravens respectively.
