What color will Gatorade be at Super Bowl LVII? Exploring history of iconic tradition

Super Bowl LV
Why does the winning Super Bowl coach get a Gatorade bath?

The Super Bowl is when everything combines into America's biggest show. From the game itself to the halftime show and everything in between, anything can become a betting opportunity or a marketing stunt.

Even the celebrations are part of the Super Bowl's ritual. Once the game is decided, the winning coach receives the now-famous Gatorade bath. The tradition is one of the coolest moments of the season, as it encapsulates an entire year of hard work that ended up winning a title.

Find out how the Gatorade bath tradition started and why the Gatorade color matters.

Gatorade's Super Bowl tradition started with the Giants in the mid-1980s

The tradition started with the New York Giants after a win against the Washington Redskins in the middle of the 1980s.

According to a Rolling Stone article, Giants nose tackle Jim Burt was upset with coach Bill Parcells because of the treatment given to him all week. Once New York beat Washington, Burt decided to throw the bath at Parcells.

Burt asked teammate Harry Carson to do it with him because Carson had a good relationship with Parcells. His idea was that Parcells could've been mad with him, but wouldn't be with Carson.

Oh, and while Parcells was the head coach, do you know who the Giants' defensive coordinator was then? His name is Bill Belichick. You might've heard of him once or twice.

Anyway, the point is, during the 1986 season, the Giants were unbelievably good, and after each and every win, the team drenched Parcells in Gatorade. The most special occasion was the last, when New York beat Denver 39-20 to win Super Bowl XXI.
