What could Tua Tagovailoa’s contract extension look like? Projecting Dolphins QB’s multiple-million deal

The Miami Dolphins drafted Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He struggled in the first two seasons of his career, but since Mike McDaniels' arrival, the Alabama product has performed well.

The Dolphins haven't offered him a contract extension yet, and Tagovailao will be a free agent next year. The franchise recently signed wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to a three-year, $84.75 million contract extension, and there are questions surrounding their quarterback's future.

Tagovailoa suffered multiple severe head injuries in 2022; otherwise, he would have signed a new deal by now. However, despite his health concerns and subpar performance in cold-weather games, the Dolphins still view him as their franchise quarterback.

He's expected to sign a new deal in the near future, but what type of deal can the 26-year-old quarterback secure? In this article, I project the terms on which the quarterback and the franchise could agree soon.

Tua Tagovailoa is coming off the best season of his career, and despite all the health concerns, he played all 17 games.

He threw for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last year, with a passer rating of 101.1. Despite a great regular season, the Dolphins quarterback struggled in the Wildcard Game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and that was a cause for concern for the franchise.

However, there's no denying that the Dolphins will be far better with Tagovailoa than without him. He has improved his game every year since entering the league, and coach Mike McDaniels can elevate him to reach new heights this year.

Tagovailoa is expected to sign a deal that will make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. Jared Goff recently signed a four-year, $212 million deal with the Detroit Lions, which included $170.6 million in guaranteed money.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the Dolphins star signs a better deal than Goff; however, due to his injury concerns, the guaranteed money could be much less.
