The XFL has been reborn in 2023 after a two-year hiatus and fans are excited to see the spring football league return. The season is already in Week 2 and is gaining traction among football enthusiasts.
While we know that the NFL stands for National Football League, some fans have been keen to know what the acronym XFL stands for.
It's safe to assume that "FL" stands for Football League, but the letter X has led to some confusion. However, if you think that the X stands for "Xtreme" or "Xtra Fun", you couldn't be further away from the truth.
In fact, all the letters in XFL simply stand for nothing at all. When WWE chief Vince McMahon founded the league in 1999, he was quick to point out that the so-called acronym didn't have any meaningful full form.

However, the wrestling mogul once joked about the XFL full form during its initial launch in 2001, while taking a sly dig at the NFL.
“The NFL stands for the ‘No Fun League.'," McMahon said. "The XFL is going to be the ‘Xtra Fun League.'"
Since we're currently in the third iteration of the XFL, there still doesn't seem to be any meaningful full form of the league. Many still believe that the "F" and "L" stand for football league but the "X" is variable, which could mean anything.
Nonetheless, current league commissioner and owner Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is eager to turn the league into a success.
