The Washington Commanders booked their spot in the NFC championship game after beating the top-seeded Detroit Lions 45-31 on Saturday night. Washington's victory in the divisional round playoffs has given the team a solid chance of making it to the Super Bowl.

Notably, this is the first time since January 1992 that Washington has qualified for the championship game. At the time, the franchise was called the Washington Redskins. They went on to win the Super Bowl that year, beating the Buffalo Bills in the big game.

The Commanders are now set to play in the NFC title game after 33 years. The achievement was largely down to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who completed 22 of 31 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns.

Washington's running back, Brian Robinson Jr., also played a key role in the win. He rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

After the game, Daniels spoke about the Commanders' victory, praising the team's offense and defense.

“It was awesome to go out there and put up 38 points (offense), and the defense scored seven points too.” Daniels said. "It was very critical to get the running game going. That is a very good team on the other sideline. We were able to get back to our identity of what we know we are. It was awesome.”

Washington improved to a 25-20 playoff record following its triumph over Detroit. The Commanders have won five NFC championships and three Super Bowls.

With Daniels leading the offense, Washington will be confident to add some titles to its trophy cabinet this season.
