"I was not thinking at that moment": When Tom Brady opened up about his viral Super Bowl boat parade

Tom Brady and the Lombardi Trophy share a remarkable history. Brady has lifted the trophy more than anyone else. In 2021, Brady claimed his seventh Super Bowl ring.

Excited by the win, the team celebrated with a $2 million boat cruise on the Hillsborough River. What followed was a heart-stopping moment for viewers as Tom Brady became meme material for weeks.

Brady casually tossed the trophy in the air to another boat, seemingly without much thought. When asked about the incident on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in February 2021, he laughingly responded:

“First of all, I was not thinking at that moment. It was not a thought. It was, 'This seems really fun to do.'”

Tom Brady's young daughter was wisest among all

Brady was seemingly caught up in the excitement of the moment. Having just won his seventh Super Bowl — the most by any player or team — and doing so in his first season with a new team, he was in a celebratory mood.

He hadn’t considered the possibility of the trophy ending up in the river that flows into Tampa Bay.

Later, Brady admitted he was under the influence and had shaky legs on a moving boat. He stumbled slightly before making the toss. As a result, he doesn’t remember the moment as clearly as others do. However, he did recall his daughter Vivian shouting:

“Daddy, no!”

“That's my little 8-year-old daughter," Brady said. "Who could imagine that an 8-year-old girl would have the most sense of anybody in that whole area? I mean, she's the voice of reason. Go figure.”

Cameron Brate had faith in Tom Brady's throw

Though Brady has plenty of Lombardi Trophies at home, he still felt some concern about it, but for a different reason:

“Not to mention, when you get your hands on one of those trophies, there's a lot of really sharp edges on the bottom. ... I found out later that had that been an incomplete pass, that would have went down like 80 feet. I'm so happy that [tight end] Cam [Brate caught it].”

When TE Cameron Brate was asked about the throw, he initially thought Brady was just pretending. However, when the throw was made, there wasn’t enough time to react. Despite being a bit under the influence of himself, Brate trusted that a throw from TB12 would be spot on.
