Tyrann Mathieu, born May 13, 1992, is an American professional football safety for the New Orleans Saints in the NFL. Known as "the Honey Badger," a nickname reflecting his tenacious playing style, Mathieu first gained fame at LSU where he set an SEC record with 11 career forced fumbles and earned consensus All-American honors. Despite being dismissed from LSU due to a violation of team rules, Mathieu made a strong comeback by being selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact, earning PFWA All-Rookie Team honors, and has since been named to the Pro Bowl three times and the first-team All-Pro three times. Mathieu has also played for the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs, where he won Super Bowl LIV.

His story is one of hard times and difficult beginnings as he did not have the normal life most of us have while growing up. Mathieu was born to a very young mother who was not around for most of the time. On the other hand, his father has been in prison for murder for most of Tyrann’s life leaving him to be raised by his grandparents.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck again once he had turned five as his grandfather passed away, and that is when his uncle and aunt decided to bring him to their home and nurtured him further. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise though, as Tyrann started playing sports with his cousins and immediately drew attention for his skills even at that young age. From there on, sports became a regular part of his everyday life and since then he has not looked back.

As a freshman, the tough playing safety got off to a quick start putting in key exemplary performances which included everything from tackles to forced fumbles to interceptions, sacks, and pass deflections throughout the year.

He continued to shine in his sophomore year as he finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting and was also named the most valuable player of the 2011 SEC Championship Game. Just when it looked like everything was going according to plan, Mathieu started buckling under the pressure of leading the LSU Tigers in every game, resorting to drugs.

However, Mathieu deserves a lot of credit for turning his life around. He started practicing again and participated in the 2013 NFL combine with the hopes of getting drafted. His dreams turned into reality when the Arizona Cardinals selected him in the third round, thus starting a new chapter in his life.

Now, as a ten year veteran of the league, and returning back to his hometown to play for the New Orleans Saints, the honey badger is looking to help his team make a comeback to the playoffs after missing out on the previous two years.
