3. Frank Gore, San Francisco 59ers, and others

The San Francisco 49ers always have had a stellar offense, and they love themselves an elite running back to act as a safety blanket for their franchise QBs. Frank Gore was that guy in the 2000s, and he made the 49ers a terror for opposing sides.

Gore was brutal, durable, and possessed a fine blend of skill and agility. He was a member of the 49ers for the first 10 years of his career before he moved on to greener pastures. Later in his hall-of-fame career, he also appeared for the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets.

He had 484 catches for 3,985 yards, 3,735 carries for 16,000 yards, and 100 (81 rushing) TDs. He was selected to play in five Pro Bowl games.

2. Walter Payton, Chicago Bears

A Chicago icon and a running back that transcended generations. Walter Payton has numerous awards named after him, and it's only fitting. Payton was a one-team man through and through, as he only played for the Chicago Bears in his illustrious 13-year NFL career. Payton only played in less than ten games once in his career, and that was in an injury-riddled 1982 season. He stayed loyal to the Chicago Bears for all 13 seasons.

Payton had 3,838 carries for 16,726 yards, 492 catches for 4,538 yards, and scored 125 (110 rushing) touchdowns. He was selected to play in 9 Pro Bowls and won a single Offensive Player of the Year and a MVP award in 1977. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

1. Emmitt Smith, Dallas Cowboys

Emmitt Smith remained that guy in Dallas for 13 seasons before quietly spending two seasons in Arizona before retiring. Smith never missed more than two games in his Dallas career, and he never shied away from a battle.

Smith had 4,409 carries for 18,355 yards, 515 catches for 3,224 yards, and scored 175 (164 rushing) touchdowns. He was selected to play in 8 Pro Bowls, and won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, 1 MVP award, 1 Super Bowl MVP, and three championships. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010. Jerry Jones' all-conquering Cowboys side of the 1990s wouldn't have been the same without Smith wreaking havoc in the backfield.
