Last year, a group that included Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton completed the acquisition of the Denver Broncos. For an estimated $4.65 billion (£3.84 billion), the Walton-Penner group purchased the Broncos.

Hamilton joined an alliance of investors who intend to create a successful team.

"We are thrilled to welcome Sir Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 winner, to our ownership group. Lewis is regarded as the most successful F1 driver of all time, with more than 100 race victories," a statement issued by major shareholder Rob Walton read.

"He is a fervent advocate for worldwide equality, especially in his own sport, and is a champion competitor who understands what it takes to manage a winning team. His tenacity and commitment to greatness will benefit the ownership group and the Broncos organization."

On October 17, when the team lost to the Chargers 19-16 in Los Angeles, Hamilton was first seen attending one of their games.

The seven-time Formula One champion termed it "an honor" to be associated with the Broncos despite the team's difficult 2022 campaign, adding that his advocacy for increased diversity and participation in the sport was a reason for his choice to get affiliated.

The Bowlen family listed the Denver Broncos for sale in February 2022. The Walton-Pinner organization's purchase of the organization was granted in August. By surpassing the $2.4 billion spent by billionaire hedge fund manager Steven Cohen to acquire the New York Mets baseball team in 2021, the deal became the most expensive for any major sports organization.

The Broncos also became only the second NFL franchise to change control in the previous 10 years after David Tepper purchased the Carolina Panthers for an estimated $2.2 billion in 2017.
