Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, attended Texas Tech from 2014 through 2016. Kliff Kingsbury, currently the Arizona Cardinals head coach, was Mahomes' coach there.

Kingsbury claimed that he and Mahomes continue to keep in touch via a chat room about Texas Tech.

Kingsbury said he was aware from the beginning that Mahomes was an exceptional talent, so his excellence as a player was not a shock.

"We knew he'd be a big acquisition for us because," in the words of Kingsbury, "once I got around him, got to know him, worked with him at football camps, you could just tell he just had some special ability and the qualities of a real winner, a real leader, and guys gravitated to him as soon as they were around."

Kingsbury took a risk on Mahomes when very few universities were ready to do so, making him one of the first sets of people that believed in him as a quarterback.

According to Kingsbury, Texas Tech wasn't good enough; therefore, Mahomes didn't receive the accolades he merited in college, but intelligent organizations like the Chiefs were well-informed of his abilities.

How good was Patrick Mahomes for Texas Tech?

Before becoming the NFL MVP, Mahomes was setting passing records at Texas Tech. Patrick Mahomes was inducted into Texas Tech University's Ring of Honor in November for his outstanding career from 2014 to 2016.

In just 32 games over his three years there, Mahomes amassed 115 total touchdowns and 11,252 passing yards. He finished his college career with the third-highest total of completions (857), touchdown passes (93), and passing yards (11,252) in school history.

He also ranked second all-time among Red Raiders quarterbacks with 22 rushing touchdowns. Texas Tech's record in contests Mahomes started was 13–16.

Mahomes decided to join the NFL draft in 2017 rather than complete his senior year as a Red Raider at Texas Tech.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Patrick Mahomes as the tenth overall choice in the 2017 NFL Draft, and he took the starting QB spot in 2018. Ever since, Mahomes has helped Kansas City host the AFC Championship Game each year, as well as winning the 2018 NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP awards.

Patrick Mahomes, one of the league's best quarterbacks, also led the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIV.
