Grant Dubose might be a name that not many football fans are familiar with, but he's had quite the journey to this year's NFL Combine. In 2020, the wide receiver was working at Walmart assisting with online grocery orders in Montgomery, Alabama, his hometown.
He was a year removed from playing at the historically black college Miles College in nearby Fairfield. It is a small school with around 1,500 students, but the football season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
During an Oct. 2021 interview with "QCity Metro", Dubose spoke about his experience working at Walmart and his goals.
Dubose said:

“During my time at Walmart, I always thought of the goals I was working towards. That time in my life taught me to trust the process and be consistent with it.”
Grant Dubose played at Park Crossing High School and Louisville Cardinals quarterback Malik Cunningham was his teammate. Dubose never got any offers to any Division I schools and ended up at Miles College. Once their season was canceled, the receiver chose to take his talents elsewhere.
Working multiple jobs, Dubose reconnected with James Foster, a backup quarterback at UNC Charlotte, and a childhood friend who had moved from Texas A&M. Foster pushed the school's coaching staff to give DuBose a tryout for the team.
Charlotte head coach Will Healy noted Dubose’s talent became apparent early in the tryout.
Healy said:
“He blew us out of the water. He was special from the get-go, so it was a no-brainer for us."
Now, Grant Dubose was ready to play college football for the first time in two years for the Charlotte 49ers.
Grant Dubose makes an impression with the 49ers given a second chance
Dubose made his debut with Charlotte in the 2021 season, leading the team with 62 receptions and 892 yards. He tied for the most touchdowns that season with six. The wideout once again led the 49ers in both receptions (64) and yards (943) while tying for the most touchdowns on the team with nine.
He is second in school history in receptions (126) and yards (1,684), while tied for second in touchdowns (15). Grant Dubose will probably not hear his name called in the early rounds of the NFL Draft. However, there's a chance he could be drafted in the latter rounds.
Time will tell if the wideout goes from the grocery store to the NFL, like another player named Kurt Warner. For Dubose, it would be an ideal path as it led Warner to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
