Martin entered the NFL in the 2015 season as an umpire. He was promoted to referee for the 2018 season. Notably, the Chiefs have a 6-0 record when Martin officiates their games, which has drawn some controversy ahead of Saturday's game.
When he is not serving as an NFL referee, Martin works as a high school basketball coach at Jenks High School (Oklahoma). He has been the athletic director for the school since 2024.
