Why is Stephon Gilmore in the news recently?
The Dallas Cowboys have acquired cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts for a fifth-round draft selection, addressing one of their more significant offseason concerns.
Gilmore recorded two interceptions in 2022, one of which happened in a contest against the Cowboys. The Cowboys will now have one of their strongest cornerback tandems in years with Gilmore and Trevon Diggs, who has appeared in the Pro Bowl the past two years.
The remaining $9.9 million in basic pay and bonus money from Gilmore's contract will be transferred to the Cowboys. In contrast, the Colts only incurred a $2 million cap hit to release him.
Gilmore has played for four different teams in the last as many years. Gilmore was traded to the Carolina Panthers in October 2021 after playing for the New England Patriots from 2017 to 2020.
He signed a two-year deal for up to $23 million with the Colts last April and played for them through 2022.
In 11 seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Patriots, Panthers and Colts, Gilmore has totaled 493 tackles, 29 interceptions and 127 pass breakups.
