In the final Sunday Night Football game of the 2024 regular season, the Minnesota Vikings' hopes of winning the NFC North and securing the top seed in the NFC were dashed after the Detroit Lions crushed them 31–9 At Ford Field.
Although it was anticipated that the game would be very competitive, the Lions applied increased pressure in the second half to easily overcome their divisional rivals to earn the conference's top seed and a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
The Vikings finished as the fifth seed in the NFC after the loss, making them the first team ever to play on Wild Card after winning up to 14 games. As a result, they will have to travel to start the playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings' first playoff opponent revealed
The Minnesota Vikings, fifth-seeded in the NFC, will now face the fourth-seeded Rams at SoFi Stadium in the opening round of the playoffs.
After choosing to rest quarterback Matthew Stafford and several other starters, the Los Angeles Rams lost to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Rams' NFC seed dropped from third to fourth as a result of the defeat, together with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' win over the New Orleans Saints earlier on Sunday.
Stafford had perhaps his best outing of the season when the Rams played the Vikings on Thursday Night Football in Week 8 of the regular season. He threw four touchdowns to help Los Angeles win 30–20 in that game. The Vikings will attempt to turn things around this time in the postseason.
While both teams are going into the playoffs on the back of losses in the final week of the regular season, they should still be considered formidable competitors in the NFC.
When is the Minnesota Vikings vs. L.A. Rams Playoff game?
The Los Angeles Rams will square off against the visiting Minnesota Vikings in an NFL Wild Card game on Monday, Jan. 13. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 8 p.m. ET at SoFi Stadium, and will be broadcast on ESPN/ABC.
The Rams and the Vikings will meet for the eighth time in the playoffs this year. Minnesota lead Los Angeles 5-2 in their last seven encounters. But since the Rams' 49-37 triumph in the divisional round in 2000, the two teams have not met in the playoffs.
