Who will be the new owner of the Washington Commanders? As Dan Synder and his wife clearout offices

Washington Football Team Announces Name Change to Washington Commanders
Dan Synder - Washington Commanders owner

The sale of the Washington Commanders might be imminent with the latest developments. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported on Thursday that Dan Synder and his wife Tanya have cleared out offices in the team's facility.

Dan Synder announced in November 2022 that he had hired Bank of America to consider a possible transaction involving the team. The franchise he has owned since 1999 might be getting a new owner in a matter of time.

Who is in Line to be the New Owner?

A couple of individuals and consortiums have shown interest in acquiring the team since Synder made his intentions known. A first round of bidding took place in December, which reportedly saw the highest offer of $6.3 billion.

However, a couple of other individuals entered the race after that, with the intention of bringing out the most enticing offer for Dan Synder. It is now believed that the team could be under new management very soon. Nonetheless, who will that be?

A number of names have been linked to the purchase of the team over the last few months. This includes Jeff Bezos, Josh Harris, Byron Allen, Tilman Fertitta, Behdad Eghbali, and John Henry. It's, however, unknown who the favorite is among the lots.

What seems clear now is the fact that the Commanders will be under new ownership very soon. With the inability to get a new stadium, dwindling attendance at games, and the attorney general's lawsuit, Synder is ready to give up ownership of the team after 24 years.

The Potential Sale Price

The potential amount for which the Washington Commanders will be sold has generated a level of debate over the past few months. Forbes valued the team at $5.6 billion in 2022, boasting as the NFL's sixth most valuable franchise.

Dan Synder is reportedly holding out for a $7 billion fee. The American businessman bought the capital city franchise from John Kent Cooke's estate in 1999 for $750 million. Synder's efforts, as well as the growth of the NFL, have aided the pump in the team's valuation.

With many in the battle to secure ownership of the Commanders and a top bid of $6.3 billion in December, it might be safe to say Synder might eventually get his asking price. A $7 billion sale will be the biggest in North America, overtaking the $4.65 billion set during the sale of the Denver Broncos in June 2022.
