The report said Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft spent plenty of time discussing the future of the organization after the season. After productive talks, the two sides agreed it was best to part ways.

"This is a move that we mutually agreed that is needed at this time," Kraft said. "What Bill accomplished, in my opinion, will never be duplicated ... It'll be difficult to see him in a cut-off hoodie on the sideline, but I'll always wish him continued success, except when it's against the beloved Patriots."

After the news that Belichick and the Patriots mutually agreed to part ways, the team hired Jerod Mayo to be the new head coach.

Belichick won six Super Bowls with the Patriots and was their head coach from 2000 until 2024. He also coached the Cleveland Browns. In his career, he went 302-165 all-time as an NFL coach.

Bill Belichick thrilled to join North Carolina

Bill Belichick will return to the sidelines in 2025 but with the University of North Carolina.

He hasn't coached in college before, but he's excited to be part of the Tar Heels program.

"I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times," Belichick said as part of a release announcing the move. "I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill."

It was also announced that Michael Lombardi, a former NFL executive, will be North Carolina's football general manager.

The Tar Heels are coming off a 6-6 season and fired legendary coach Mack Brown at the end of the campaign.

North Carolina hasn't won a conference title since 1980.
