Why are Raiders out of the playoffs? Exploring 3 turning points in Las Vegas 2024 season

The Las Vegas Raiders had an eventful preseason. The Raiders signed Gardner Minshew as their starting quarterback, let go of star running back Josh Jacobs, and welcomed Georgia Bulldogs star tight end Brock Bowers. The front office's roster construction was interesting, but fans were willing to see how things went.

However, it wasn't to be. The Raiders were eliminated from playoff contention after a Week 13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The loss left them with a 2-10 record, ending any postseason hopes. Heading into the final regular season game against the LA Chargers, the Raiders hold a 4-12 record.

Why are the Las Vegas Raiders out of the playoffs?

1. Davante Adams trade

Davante Adams' time in Las Vegas always felt numbered after his friend and college teammate Derek Carr was let go by the franchise. Adams was vocal about Carr's influence in getting him to Las Vegas, and his relationship with the organization felt fractured by the manner of Carr's departure.

Hence, it didn't come as a surprise when Adams was traded to the New York Jets on October 15, 2024, for draft compensation. Adams' departure deprived the Raiders of an elite WR1, and while it helped increase Brock Bowers' targets, it was detrimental to the team's playoff chances.

Adams remains sixth in receiving yards despite playing in just three games. It's a tale of what might have been if his heart had been in Las Vegas.

2. Pre Bye Week losing streak

The Las Vegas Raiders endured a five-game losing streak just before their Week 10 bye. Gardner Minshew & Co. did not score more than 24 points in any of those games, and it wasn't a surprise that they had little to no luck at that stage of the season.

They lost games to the Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. Yes, these teams are playoff-caliber franchises. However, every team in the NFL needs to pull off the occasional win in a five-game stretch to have a fighting chance of making the playoffs.

3. Post-Bye Week losing streak

The bye week is usually a time for teams to regroup and figure out how to tackle the rest of the regular season. Good teams go to the bye week and return better, while playoff contenders enter the bye week and become Super Bowl caliber.

However, the Raiders went into the bye week losing and returned to lose some more.

After their Week 10 bye, the Raiders went on a five-game losing streak. They lost to the Miami Dolphins, Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons before their recent two-game winning streak.

They were eliminated after their second loss to the Chiefs and can now focus on a long-overdue full-scale rebuild in the upcoming offseason.
