Ron Rivera was fired as the head coach of the Washington Commanders in January 2024 after managing partner Josh Harris decided the team needed a fresh approach to boost their performance.
Shortly after Rivera was dismissed, Harris sent a statement on social media saying that last season's subpar performance was the primary reason for that decision. He also admitted that the team needed a change in approach and direction.
Exploring the reasons for Ron Rivera's sack as the head coach of the Commanders
Ron Rivera was appointed as the Washington Commanders’ head coach in 2020 after nine years of serving in the same capacity with the Carolina Panthers.

Rivera guided Carolina to a 76-63-1 record and a 2015 Super Bowl berth. However, he was unable to replicate that level of play in his four years in Washington.
During his tenure as the Commanders' head coach, the 62-year-old was unable to find a permanent quarterback and made poor personnel judgments. The team didn't have a winning record during that time and continuously played poorly. They also only had just one appearance in the playoffs.
Rivera lost his only postseason game as head coach of the Commanders, who had a 26-40-1 record under him.
He was ultimately fired following the 2023 season, which concluded with a terrible 4-13 record. Although the Commanders weren't expected to compete for the Super Bowl that season, it was expected that they would at least appear promising and possibly make a run to the postseason with a respectable-looking defense.
Ron Rivera expected to interview for the New York Jets' vacant head coach role
With one week left in the 2024 regular season, the New York Jets are finally starting the process of finding a head coach to fill their vacancy. According to reports, the organization plans to interview two candidates in the weeks to come to replace Robert Saleh, who was fired after going 2-3 to start the season.
According to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero, the team is scheduled to interview Ron Rivera this week for the position of head coach. He isn't working for any team right now, so the Jets can talk to him before the regular season ends.
According to reports, the team will also interview former head coach Rex Ryan, who confirmed on Monday that he will talk to the Jets about the open post after the regular season is over. Rex was the head coach in charge when the Jets made their last playoff appearance in 2010.
