The Atlanta Falcons will begin their 2024 NFL preseason by squaring off against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday. Although the Falcons have not officially named their starting quarterback for the game, coach Raheem Morris has provided updates on Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr.

As things stand, Penix Jr. will likely start in the preseason opener against Miami on Friday. The rookie was named as Cousins' backup on Atlanta's QB depth chart earlier this week.

Since coach Morris is not expected to risk his starting quarterback in a preseason game, Penix Jr. should take most of the snaps against Miami. Signal callers Taylor Heinicke and Nathan Rourke might also be able to show their worth.

Morris spoke to reporters on Wednesday and provided insight regarding his preseason plans:

"Our threes will get a chance to get out there in some of our preseason work, and some of our twos as well, and we'll play a couple of the ones," Morris said. "We'll have to make an evaluation from a coach's standpoint."
"Kirk won't get nearly as much work in those types of situations, if any," added Morris.

The Falcons selected Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick in this year's NFL draft. The quarterback had a stellar final collegiate season with the Washington Huskies, leading them to the national championship game, where they fell to Michigan.

Cousins, who was signed in the offseason, has four Pro Bowl honors and 12 years of NFL experience. The Falcons are likely to save the veteran for the regular season.
