Will the Packers retire Aaron Rodgers' No. 12 jersey? Exploring the veteran QB's odds

Will the Packers retire Aaron Rodgers' No. 12 jersey?

The status of Aaron Rodgers as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL is undoubted. He has spent his entire career so far with the Green Bay Packers since he was drafted in 2005, leading them to a Super Bowl victory and winning multiple awards along the way.

After almost two decades with the team, Rodgers seems ready to move on. Despite signing a new three-year deal with the team a year ago, the quarterback looks set to dramatically join the New York Jets before the start of next season.

Considering the way the two parties are divorcing, the question is whether the franchise will retire Rodgers' number 12 jersey. Without a doubt, it is an honor well deserved by the veteran quarterback, but with his expected forced exit, will the team bestow him with it?

How many jerseys numbers have the Packers retired?

The Green Bay Packers have so far retired six jersey numbers in their entire history. The honor was first bestowed to Don Hutson, who had his No. 14 jersey retired in 1951. He was immediately followed by Tony Canadeo, whose No. 3 jersey was retired a year later in 1952.

The team bestowed a player the honor for the third time in 1973 when long-serving quarterback Bart Starr had his No. 15 jersey retired. Linebacker Ray Nitschke, who played 15 seasons with the Packers, also had his No. 66 jersey retired 10 years after Starr in 1983.

Reggie White was the fifth player to have his jersey retired by the Packers. The "minister of defense" had his No. 92 jersey retired in 1999. Brett Favre was the last player to be bestowed the honor with the Packers. The quarterback's No. 4 jersey was retired in 2015.

What are Aaron Rodgers’ chances?

There's no question as to whether the veteran signal-caller deserves to have his jersey number retired or not. He has certainly been one of the best quarterbacks in the league for almost two decades and his impact on the Packers cannot be overstated.

However, the messy breakup in the works between Rodgers and the Packers will honestly be a stain on his legacy with the team. This could obviously bring about reluctance within the franchise management in bestowing the rare honor on the 2005 draftee.

Nonetheless, he is not alone in having a chaotic separation from the Packers. Brett Favre, the last player to have his jersey number retired by the franchise, also left the team on such a note. Rodgers is looking to follow in his footsteps by moving to the New York Jets.

Rodgers will definitely at some point in the future have his No. 12 jersey retired by the Green Bay Packers. Just as in Favre's case, it will certainly not be immediately. The wound caused by his exit will need to heal first before he can be considered for the honor.
