The Seahawks have been a pass-heavy team in the 2024 NFL season, but the game against the Bears called for a different approach with Zach Charbonnet thrust to the fore after rain intervened on Thursday Night Football in Week 17.
Seattle came into this game knowing that they needed to win to have any realistic chance of making the playoffs. With the only way out of the NFC West being through winning the division, the Seahawks needed a victory to equal the Rams' nine wins before Los Angeles plays this week. Their last game is against each other and that will determine who goes through beyond the regular season.
For Chicago, the motivation was pride. With home fans packing into Soldier Field in the rain one day after Christmas, the Bears players needed to do something that would give their passionate supporters something to cheer about after a season of disappointment. They are already out of the playoffs and are the only team from the NFC North to not make the postseason.
With it being a pivotal matchup for the Seahawks, here is how Zach Charbonnet fared.

The Seahawks have struggled to get anything going on the ground but it was a bit more balanced tonight. They got 122 rushing yards compared to the 160 through the air. Zach Charbonnet led the category in terms of total yardage with 57 on the ground. However, compatriot Kenny McIntosh eclipsed him in average yards per carry. The latter had 46 yards in seven attempts at 6.6 yards on average, nearly double the 3.8 yards per carry that the former recorded.
Perhaps more worryingly, quarterback Geno Smith rushed for 19 yards in three attempts picking up 6.3 yards on average. His longest attempt of 16 yards was shy of Kenny McIntosh's 25 but still above Zach Charbonnet's 11. It pointed to the Seahawks still struggling to open up rushing lanes for their primary running back.
Seattle still needs a favor from the Cardinals this week against the Rams to burnish their playoff credentials. However, this 6-3 win against a struggling Bears shows that they are unlikely to trouble other NFC teams if they do make the postseason. Much of it is down to Zach Charbonnet and the running game struggling to get going, which is affecting the passing offense. It is particularly in the red zone and the lack of play-action plays by their quarterback.
