Zach Wilson is the quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Born on August 3, 1999, the 24-year-old is from Draper, Utah. Growing up in Utah, Wilson was a big fan of the Utah Utes football team. As a matter of fact. Wilson’s father, Mike, was also a member of the Utes football team, where he was a defensive lineman. At the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson was picked as the overall #2 by the New York Jets; however, due to his gameplay, he is considered to be a draft bust, given that in three seasons with the Jets, he recorded 23 touchdowns and 993 carried for 6,293 passing yards, and has a record of 12-21 as of the 2023 season. Thus, his contract was not extended for the fifth year and was in fact traded with the Broncos in April 2024.
Where did Zach Wilson attend college?
Zach Wilson spent three years at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah, from 2018-2020. This was an ironic situation though, as he grew up a fan of the Utah Utes and he disliked BYU. However, he found himself as the quarterback for the BYU Cougars football team.
In his freshman year, he passed for 1,578 yards and had 12 passing touchdowns to 3 interceptions on 65.9% completion. He also added 221 yards on the ground with 2 additional touchdowns. He was also named the MVP for the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl game.
Wilson’s sophomore year, which should have seen him flourish instead saw him take a step back. In nine games, Wilson had 2,382 passing yards and 11 touchdowns but he also had nine interceptions. His 186 rushing yards included three touchdowns as well. With his back against the wall and not a whole lot of people taking interest in him, Wilson had a point to prove. In his junior year, Wilson made a great comeback, playing in 12 games and putting up 3,692 passing yards with 33 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions. He also ran the ball for 286 yards and 10 touchdowns.
For his efforts on the field, he was named the offensive MVP of the 2020 Boca Raton Bowl, a game in which he completed 26 of 34 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns.
