Zay Jones is an American Football wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. The former 37th overall pick from round 2 of the 2017 NFL Draft has been in the league for eight years. The 29-year-old (as of July 2024) comes from a football family. His father Robert Jones, a three-time SB champion, was a linebacker on the 90s Cowboys dynasty. His uncle Jeff Blake quarterbacked multiple teams during his decade and half long career in the NFL. Jones's elder brother Cayleb is a former NFL wide receiver while his younger brother Vi is a linebacker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jones followed his father’s footsteps when he decided to join East Carolina in 2013, where his father played college ball. The East Carolina alumni broke the FBS record in receptions. His 399 catches in NCAA FBS history still stands to this day. He finished his 4-year collegiate career by racking in 4,279 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Zay Jones Teams
Zay Jones has previously played on three teams since joining the league and has signed with the Arizona Cardinals in May 2024, which would be his fourth.
2017 - 2019
The 6 ft 2 in wideout was a second-round selection by the Buffalo Bills in the 2017 NFL draft. He played with a torn labrum for the majority of his rookie year and was able to haul only 27 catches for 316 yards. He also caught 2 balls for 20 yards in the playoffs that year. The following year was a breakout for him as he led the team with 56 receptions and 652 yards with a rookie Josh Allen at the helm.
However, in 2019, everything went downhill for Zay Jones. He was traded mid-season by the Bills after his poor start in the season which saw him receiving only 69 yards in the first 5 games.
2019 - 2021
After getting traded to the Raiders in 2019, Zay Jones played in 10 games for them in which he was able to get 147 receiving yards. After having a down year, expectations were high for the 4th year player entering 2020. But nothing changed the following year too as he caught only 14 balls for 154 yards. He was only in the starting lineup for 2 games in the season.
The 2021 season saw a significant rise in his production as he totaled more yards than the previous two seasons combined. He finished the year with 47 receptions for 546 yards.
2022 - 2023
A solid 2021 season saw Jones sign a lucrative 3-year contract with $8 million AAV with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency. Jones enjoyed a career year with 82 receptions and 823 receiving yards in 2022. He was also instrumental in the postseason where he averaged almost 80 yards in two playoff games. However, the following year saw his production drop by more than half due to missing half the season with leg and knee injuries. He totaled more than 1100 yards in two seasons with the Jaguars.
2024 - Present
After getting cut by the Jaguars in April 2024, he signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals for the upcoming 2024 season.
