Abbas Ali Baig Biography
Abbas Ali Baig was born on 19th March, 1939. He belonged to Hyderabad, which later produced highly wristy players like Mohammad Azharuddin and VVS Laxman. He was an elegant right-handed batsman.
Background
He played his first first-class match against Andhra Pradesh in the year 1954. In his first Ranji Trophy season in 1954, He amassed 187 runs at an average of 63.
He moved to England in the late 50’s and represented University college, Oxford.
Debut
His first-class success helped him earn a place in the national side replacing Vijay Manjrekar when India toured England in 1959. At a very tender age of 20, Baig scored a century on his debut, defying the odds.
Rise to Glory
He became the first batsman ever to cross the three-digit score in the fourth innings of the match on debut. He made vital contributions for the team which won their first ever Test match against Australia in 1960.
Low Points
However, with a bad run of form against Pakistan, Baig received heavy criticism, based on religious factors in the early 60’s and was subsequently dropped.
He came back to the playing XI with a heavy first class runs in his bag against the mighty Windies in 1966.
Though he was part of the squad that toured England in 1971, he didn't play a game.
Retirement
Baig played his last match in the year 1961 against the West Indies in the Eden Gardens. Although he was a part of the squad till 1971, he never played a single game.
He scored 428 runs in his 10 international appearances.
His first-class stats however tell a different story aggregating more than 12000 runs with 21 centuries and a double ton.
