Darius Visser T20I Career
Darius Visser made his T20I debut for Samoa against Fiji in the capital city of Apia on August 17, 2024, in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier A 2024. He had a dream international debut by smashing 30 runs off just 12 balls and picking up a four-wicket haul, which was the best figures by a Samoan in T20Is (4-1-11-4).
Despite Samoa losing the match, Visser continued his form against the Cook Islands both with the bat (21 off 11 balls) and with the ball (3-0-22-1). However, he shattered records in the next match against Vanuatu by scoring six sixes in a single over, equalling the records of Yuvraj Singh (2007), Kieron Pollard (2021), and Dipendra Singh Airee (2023).
Samoa was reeling at 18/4 with Visser and skipper Caleb Jasmat at the helm. After skipper Jasmat was dismissed for 61/5, Visser single-handedly shouldered the responsibility by smashing 132 off just 62 balls, which included 5 boundaries and 14 sixes. Fereti Suluoto, on the non-striker end, spectating his way to forge a century stand with Visser and help Samoa post a respectable and match-winning total of 174.
Visser smashed Nalin Nipiko for 39 runs in the fifteenth over of the game. He smashed three straight sixes off the first three balls. With Nipiko overstepping thrice, it was a gift well presented for Visser by the latter as he took advantage of missing out on a delivery that went for a dot and smashed the next three deliveries out of the park and set a new T20I record.
In the process, Visser also contributed to the highest percentage of runs in a completed innings in T20Is (75.86 %), surpassing Aaron Finch’s 75.1% record against Zimbabwe in July 2018. It is also the highest individual score by a Samoan batter in T20Is. In the three T20I matches he has played so far, Visser has already won two ‘Player of the Match’ awards.
