David Evans: A Brief Biography

David Gwilym Lloyd Evans was a first-class umpire who was playing as a wicketkeeper in cricket prior to that. He was born on 27 July 1933 in Lambeth, London. He died on 25 March 1990 in Cwmpengraig, Drefach, Llandysul, Dyfed. He has been the chairman of the professional group of first-class umpires.

Early Career

David Evans played cricket for the Ammanford club. Then in the mid 1950s joined Glamorgan club and debuted in 1956. He was the first-choice wicketkeeper and got his county cap after the retirement of Haydn Davies. At the start of the 1960s, he was at or near the top of the top wicketkeepers lists with regard to dismissals as he got 79, 82 and 89 dismissals in sequence in the seasons from 1961 to 1963. Out of these, the 89 dismissals in 1963 was a county record for Glamorgan and listed him as the leading wicketkeeper of the year. He left first-class cricket soon in 1969 after Eifion Jones' better batting shadowed his skill and position.

Umpiring career

After his retirement, he qualified as an umpire and was appointed to the first-class list for the 1971 English cricket season. In 1981 he graduated to umpiring test panel with his first match being the record Test match held at Headingley, leeds between England and Australia when Ian Botham's 149 and Bob Willis's eight for 43 won a match that had seemed lost.

Other major matches were England against India, New Zealand and Pakistan, and also the first Test played by Sri Lanka in England in 1984. In July 1985, he umpired his last test match, again a Test match between England and Australia. His ODI debut was in India vs West Indies match held at Birmingham on June 9, 1979. His last ODI match was on May 30, 1985 a match between England and Australia.

He umpired 9 test matches and 13 ODI matches. He has not TV umpired a single match.

Retirement

In the September of 1985 he underwent heart surgery and returned in 1986 but continued into a light and irregular schedule now. He had been reappointed for the 1990s season into the umpires' panel but could not be a part as he died before it started.
