Stefon Diggs’ Early Life and Background

Diggs was born in Alexandria, Virginia. He spent his childhood in Maryland, attending the Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. He used to play football and run track in high school. In his senior year, Diggs recorded 700 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. He also made 31.5 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Following his senior season, he was named MVP of the U.S. Army All-American Junior Combine in 2011 and was invited to play in the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He also competed as a sprinter and even placed 7th in the 100-meter dash in the prelims of the Bill Carver T&F Classic, while also leading his 4 x 200 m team to a third-place finish. A consensus five-star recruit, Diggs was viewed as one of the best players in the nation. He was considered the second-based WR recruit in the nation and was rated as the No.1 recruit in the state of Maryland. He was ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the nation and the No. 3 athlete by ESPN. He chose to stay close to home and committed to the University of Maryland on February 10, 2012.

Stefon Diggs Collegiate Career

Diggs accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Maryland in College Park, where he played on coach Randy Edsall's Maryland Terrapins football team from 2012 to 2014. As a true freshman in 2012, Diggs ranked second in the ACC and eighth nationally with 172.4 all-purpose yards per game, while his 1,896 all-purpose yards were the second most in a single season in school history, trailing only Torrey Smith, who posted 2,192 yards in 2009. He ranked fifth in the conference in receiving yards (77.1/game), second in kick return average (28.5), and fifth in punt return average (10.0). He led the team in receptions (54), receiving yards (848), and touchdown receptions (6). He finished second to Miami’s Duke Johnson in the ACC Freshman of the Year voting.

As a sophomore, Diggs played only seven games and was an honorable mention All-ACC selection. As a junior, Diggs played in 10 games but again missed time to injury. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors and was named an honorable mention All-Big Ten. He led the team in receptions with 62, receiving yards with 792, and receiving touchdowns with five all in ten games.

After his junior season, Diggs decided to forgo his senior season and entered the 2015 NFL Draft. Diggs (6 ft 0 in (1.83 m), 195 pounds (88 kg)) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds at the 2015 NFL Combine and stood on those numbers at his Pro Day. He ran the 20-yard shuttle in 4.11 seconds and also had a 60-yard long shuttle time of 11.46 seconds. He was selected in the fifth round with the 146th overall pick by the Minnesota Vikingsin the Draft and the 20th wide receiver to be selected in the draft. Stefon Diggs’ NFL Journey

Diggs signed a four-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings after being drafted. He got his first start in Week 4 of his rookie season, against the Denver Broncos. Diggs had a good rookie season and played a total of 13 games (starting 9 of them). He was named to the 2015 PWFA All-Rookie Team. Diggs led the Vikings in receptions (52) and receiving yards (720). It was the 2nd most receiving yardage, behind Raiders’ Amari Cooper.

Diggs was the 2nd wide receiver behind Charles Johnson but led the franchise for targets, receptions, and yards. He finished his second Vikings season with 84 receptions on 111 targets for 903 yards and 3 touchdowns. He made the Playoffs in 3 out of the 5 seasons with the Vikings. In the 2017 postseason NFC Divisional Round game, he made a winning play with a 61-yard touchdown. His magnificent play was dubbed the ‘Minneapolis Miracle. The Vikings however, lost in the NFC Championship.

He signed a five-year contract extension worth $72 million with the Vikings in 2018 but was traded by the franchise in 2020. He was traded to the Buffalo Bills and made it to 2 Playoffs in his 2 seasons with them. He has developed a great rapport with the Bills quarterback Josh Allen and was named to the Pro Bowl consecutively in his two seasons at Buffalo. Diggs finished the 2021 season with 1,225 receiving yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns and looks set to continue that trend after signing with the team till 2026.

Minnesota Vikings(2015-2019)

Diggs was drafted by the Vikings in the 5th Round of the 2015 NFL Draft and he spent 5 seasons with them. He signed a four-year, $2.5 million deal that included a guaranteed $227,000 signing bonus. Diggs was an impressive rookie and featured for the Vikings regularly despite being the 2nd wide receiver for the team.

After his impressive performance in his first career start, Diggs cemented his starting position on the team. Since Randy Moss in 1998, Diggs was the first Vikings rookie to record consecutive 100-yard games, and 80 or more receiving yards in his first three games. Diggs' yardage over four games ranks him second among all NFL players in their first four career games since 1960. On January 19, 2016, Diggs was named to the 2015 NFL All-Rookie team. Despite being inactive for the first three games of the 2015 campaign, Diggs led the Vikings in receptions with 52 and receiving yards with 720 yards including 13 receptions of 20+ yards. It was the 2nd-most receiving yardage by a rookie that year. In Week 2, Diggs finished with career highs of 9 catches and 182 receiving yards, earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Diggs became only the third receiver in team history to have back-to-back 100-plus-yard games in the first two games of the season. His 13 receptions in Week 9, set a team record for most receptions in a November game. In the NFC divisional round against the New Orleans Saints, Diggs finished with 137 receiving yards and a touchdown. With only 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Diggs made the winning play with a 61-yard touchdown, giving the Vikings a dramatic 29–24 win, dubbed the “Minneapolis Miracle”.

On July 31, 2018, Diggs signed a five-year, $72 million contract extension with the Vikings through the 2023 season. He finished the 2018 season with 102 receptions for 1,021 yards and nine touchdowns. Diggs and Adam Thielen gave the Vikings their first pair of 1,000+ yard receivers since Moss and Carter in 2000. Diggs finished the 2019 season with 63 receptions for 1,130 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns.

Buffalo Bills(2020-Present)

On March 20, 2020, the Vikings traded Diggs and their seventh-round draft pick to the Buffalo Bills for their first, fifth, and sixth-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, in addition to a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He quickly developed a rapport with QB Josh Allen. In Week 14, Diggs tied Eric Moulds for the franchised record in receptions during a single season with exactly 100 while also becoming the quickest player in NFL history to reach 100 catches in a single season with a new team. The next week, he broke Moulds’ record for receiving yards in a single season, earning him AFC Offensive Player of the Week. For the 2020 season, Diggs tallied 127 receptions and 1,535 yards, both marks leading the NFL, and eight touchdowns. Diggs earned the first Pro Bowl honor of his career and was voted First-Team All-Pro. In the Wild Card Round, Diggs tallied six catches for 128 yards and a touchdown, while recording eight catches for 106 yards and a touchdown in the Divisional Round. He had a mediocre 77-yard, a 6-catch outing in the AFC Championship Game. Diggs was named to the Pro Bowl for a second consecutive year and finished his 2021 campaign with 1,255 receiving yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns.
