Vikas Krishan Yadav

Vikas Krishan Yadav is an Indian amateur boxer born on 10th February 1992. He hails from Singhwa Khas village of Haryana's Hisar district. Vikas represents India internationally in the 69 kg middleweight category.

Vikas Krishan Yadav - Early Life , Family & Background

Vikas Krishan Yadav was born to Krishan Kumar Yadav and his wife. He comes from a humble family background residing in Singhwa Khas Village of Hisar district. His father is a government employee working in the electricity department.

In 1994, Vikas and his family moved to Bhiwani after his father, Krishan, got transferred there. Bhiwani is a well-known place for producing prominent names in wrestling and boxing. At the age of 10, Vikas joined the Bhiwani Boxing Club and received his first boxing lessons at the club. Later, he moved to Pune to train at the Army Sports Institute.

At the Army Sports Institute, Vikas began to pursue boxing professionally. He has completed his graduation from Kurukshetra University, thanks to a year hiatus after an early exit from the 2012 London Olympics. He is currently serving in the Haryana Police as the Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Vikas Krishan Yadav Biography

After receiving the training from Army Sports Institute, Vikas's career began to take off. In 2007, Vikas received the first international medal of his career by clinching the Gold medal in the 48kg category at the World Cadet Boxing Championships.

In 2009, he won the Gold medal at the Youth National Boxing Championships. Later that year, he competed in the National Boxing Championships but lost to Rakesh Kalaskar in the 3rd round of the 60 kg category. The following year, he was crowned as Champion in the 60 kg category at the Haryana State Championships, followed by a Gold in the same category at the National Boxing Championships.

In 2011, Vikas came first in the 69kg category in the national trials and he did again in 2012 in the 75kg. In 2012, he won the Bronze medal at the Grand Prix Ústí Nad Labem in the Czech Republic.

In 2014, he won the Bronze medal in 75kg at the Doha International Boxing Tournament.

At the 2019 South Asian Games, Vikas won the Gold medal in the 69kg held in Nepal.

Vikas Krishan Yadav Achievements

Vikas Krishan Yadav received a breakthrough in his career when he won the Gold medal in 69kg Middleweight at the 2010 Asian Youth Boxing Championship. In the same year, he won another Gold medal at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Baku, followed by the Bronze medal in Lightweight at the Youth Olympics in Singapore and a Gold medal in Lightweight at the Guangzhou Asian Games.

In 2011, he won a Bronze medal in Welterweight at the World Amateur Boxing Championship. A year later, Vikas competed in his debut Olympics at the London Olympics but was knocked out in the preliminary round.

At the 2014 Asian Games, Vikas won the Bronze medal after losing to Kazakhstan’s Zhanibek Alimkhanuly in the semi-final. In 2015, he clinched the Silver medal in the Middleweight category at the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok. Later that year, he competed in the World Amateur Boxing Championships but lost in the quarterfinals.

In 2016, Vikas made his second Olympics appearance at the Rio Olympics but couldn’t win any medals as he lost in the quarterfinals round of the 75kg middleweight. The following year, he won the Bronze medal in the Middleweight category at the Asian Boxing Championships.

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he clinched the Gold medal in the Middleweight category and as a result, he became the first Indian male boxer to win the Gold medal at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. In the same year, at the Jakarta Asian Games, he was forced to settle for the Bronze medal after he withdrew from the semi-final round due to a serious eye injury.

In 2020, Vikas will make his third consecutive Olympic Games appearance at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after he reached the final of the Asia and Oceania Olympics Qualification Tournament. However, he couldn’t compete in the final as he withdrew from it due to an eye injury.
