Hailing from Sugar Land, Texas, United States, Simone Manuel is notable for her expertise in freestyle swimming events. Manuel created history by securing two gold and two silver medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She won gold in the 100-meter freestyle, the 4×100 meter medley, and silver medals in the 50-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Manuel’s win in the 100-meter freestyle was historic as she became the first Black American woman to win an individual Olympic gold in swimming. In that victory, she tied with Penny Oleksiak of Canada and set a new Olympic & American record. She also went on to win a bronze medal for her team in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Manuel attended Stanford University from 2014 to 2018. At the university, she was a member of the Stanford Cardinal women's swimming team. She also secured six individual NCAA championships by winning the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle in 2015, 2017, and 2018.
