20-year-old Coco Gauff, an American tennis player, first rose to fame after upsetting seven-time Grand Slam winner and former World No. 1 Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019. She is the youngest player ever to qualify for the Wimbledon main draw in the Open Era at the age of 15 years and three months. Her best Grand Slam performances include winning the 2023 US Open, where she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in three sets and became the first American teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999.
Gauff achieved her career-high singles ranking of No. 2 in June 2024 and is ranked No. 3 (as of November 2024) by the WTA. In doubles, she achieved her career-high ranking of No. 1 after qualifying for the 2023 WTA Finals along with Jessica Pegula and became the first player to qualify in both disciplines in back-to-back years since Sara Errani. She is currently ranked No. 25 in the world in the doubles category.
She has won nine singles and nine doubles titles in her career so far, including winning her second WTA 1000 title at the 2024 China Open, defeating Karolina Muchova in straight sets. Gauff reached the semifinal of the 2024 Wuhan Open, where she lost to No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final. She also emerged victorious at the 2024 French Open in doubles, with Katerina Siniakova defeating the duo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
Gauff secured a spot at the semifinal of the 2024 WTA Finals, registering a win against No. 2 Iga Swiatek and Pegula at the group stage. Defeat over No. 2 Swiatek is followed by registering a win against World No. 1 Sabalenka in the semifinal to reach her maiden WTA Finals. She defeated gold medalist Qinwen Zheng in the finals after recovering from a set defeat. By winning the WTA Finals, she became the youngest player to win one of the prestigious tournaments since Maria Sharapova in 2004, which is reserved for the best players in the world.
Despite losing in the third round of the 2024 Paris Olympics, she was selected by the United States Olympic Committee to be the flag-bearer for the country along with LeBron James at the opening ceremony. Gauff won her first WTA singles title at the Linz Open in 2019 at the age of 15 years and seven months, making her the youngest player to win the singles title on the WTA Tour since 2004.
