After retiring from professional hockey in 2010, Carbery began his coaching career with the South Carolina Stingrays, serving as an assistant before being promoted to head coach. He led the team to consistent playoff appearances and established himself as a rising coaching talent. Carbery later took on roles in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the American Hockey League (AHL), including a stint as head coach of the Hershey Bears. With Hershey, he earned the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award in 2021 after guiding the team to the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy for the best regular-season record. He was named the head coach of the Washington Capitals on May 30, 2023.
