He went to Kilgore College which is a junior college in Texas. On the Kilgore Rangers football team, Johnson played two positions, the quarterback and the tight end. After completing his freshman season with Kilgore College, he transferred to the University of Oklahoma where he would play the remainder of his college eligibility.
Johnson then spent the next four years playing for the Oklahoma Sooners football team from 2009 to 2012. However, he didn’t become an offensive lineman until 2011. With relatively less to no playing time available as a quarterback, Johnson started playing as a tight end in his second year.
In his third year, in 2011, he first transitioned from a tight end to a defensive end. But that role did not last very long as injuries to the offensive line forced the coach to change his position once again to a right tackle.
After that, Johnson developed a permanent position as the right tackle and at times as a left tackle. He took his new position very well, becoming a top-level player in less than a year.
