The Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award is one of the important awards presented to its players by Major League Baseball (MLB). First introduced in 1940, this award is presented to the two outstanding rookie players in the American League (AL) and the National League (NL) every season. Notably, Jackie Robinson was the first recipient of the award in 1940 and it was eventually renamed in his honor on the 40th anniversary.
The Baseball Writer's Association of America (BBWAA) is notable for voting for the rookie players of the year before the postseason starts every year. The award was initially presented to one best rookie players in the league from 1947 to 1948. Starting from 1949 onwards, the league started presenting this award to the best rookie players from the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). The most recent recipient of the Jackie Robinson AL Rookie of the Year Award is Luis Gil of the New York Yankees in 2024. Likewise, Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates won the award and became the Jackie Robinson NL Rookie of the Year in 2024.
