Nesmith attended Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina, where he emerged as a four-star athlete. He then played college basketball at Vanderbilt from 2018 to 2020, where he displayed his exceptional shooting ability. He averaged a jaw-dropping 52.2% from 3-point range in his sophomore season, making him one of the purest shooters of his class.

In the 2020 NBA Draft, Nesmith was selected 14th overall by the Boston Celtics. He spent his first two years with the Celtics, experiencing growth and even reaching the NBA Finals in 2022.
