D'Angelo Russell is a 6 feet 4 inch tall Point Guard who plays for the highly-revered Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA. Russell has been a great addition to the NBA because of his play-making and scoring abilities as a talented point guard.

Russell played college Basketball for Ohio State and put up first round pick-worthy numbers, averaging 19 points and nearly 6 rebounds per game on 44 % shooting from the field.

After only playing a single season of College Ball, Russell declared his name for the 2015 NBA Draft and to his surprise was selected second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Russell showed good potential in his Rookie season as he became only the fourth player to record a minimum of 1300 points, 400 rebounds, and 400 assists. His impressive Rookie season earned him a well-deserved spot in the All-Rookie Second Team.

In his second season, Russell continued to show improvement in his game. However, he also faced some challenges off-court after being involved in a few controversies. As his second season came to an end, the Lakers organization and Russell decided to part ways as he got traded to the Brooklyn Nets.

Russell had a decent first season at Brooklyn, averaging 15.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists which included three 30-plus point games. Despite Russell’s best efforts the Nets couldn’t clinch a playoff seed and had an overall tedious season.

With a disappointing start to the 2018-19 season, Russell and the Nets managed to win only 8 out of their first 20 games. But things changed for the better close to mid-season as the Nets started winning more frequently.

As the regular season approached an end, the Brooklyn Nets qualified for the 2019 playoffs but got eliminated in the first round by a much better Philadelphia 76ers team, losing the series four games to one (4-1).

Russell had one of his career’s best seasons in 2019, averaging 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game on 43.4% shooting from the field.

A Brief Stint with The Warriors

Russell played two seasons for the Nets from 2017-2019 before being traded again, this time to the Golden State Warriors where he spent just one season before joining the Minnesota Timberwolves via a sign-and-trade deal.

Russell joined the Minnesota Timberwolves in early 2020 for $28 Million over three years, D'Angelo’s time with the Wolves was plagued by injuries that restricted his appearances to fewer games but he still managed impressive performances whenever called upon despite limited minutes indicating what could be possible if he was healthy throughout the full season.

In the 173 games played in four years, Russell averaged 18.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game for the Timberwolves. The Karl-Anthony Towns and Russell led Timberwolves even qualified for the 2022 playoffs but got eliminated in 6 six games in the Conference Quarter Finals by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Return to the Lakers

Russell reunited with the team that drafted him in February of 2023 as part of the 8-player deal involving three teams. Russell’s return to the Lakers has thus far proved to be a good choice by the Lakers.

Overall, D'Angelo Russell has had an up-and-down career as he has completed his eighth season in the league. However, these setbacks haven’t stopped him from being a talented athlete as evidenced by his numerous individual accolades. His future potential as a player remains promising as he has many memorable seasons to give to us Basketball fans.
