Winston was born on December 19, 1964, in Gary, Indiana, and studied at Theodore Roosevelt College and Career Academy. Winston started his college career playing for the Southeastern Community College but transferred to Missouri State University. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as a second-round 40th overall pick in the 1987 NBA draft, but was transferred to the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

In his career, Darius Garland had played eight NBA seasons for six different teams. He last played for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1994-95 NBA season, averaging 6.1 points and 4.4 assists per game.
