Mitchell initially attended Sickles High School in Citrus Park, Florida for his freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Bishop McLaughlin Catholic School in Spring Hills, Florida for his junior year and then finally transferred to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida for his final year. He played in the 2022 McDonald’s All-American Boys game and the Jordan Brand Classic. For his efforts and performance, Mitchell was the 2022 Jordan Brand Classic MVP, leading all scorers with 18 points.
After his stellar high school career, Mitchell was a consensus five star recruit and was considered one of the best players in his draft class. Dillon Mitchell received offers from various top universities and programs such as Tennessee and Florida State but on October 25, 2021, Mitchell committed to the Texas Longhorns. He played one season for Texas and averaged 4.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.4 assists in 17.5 minutes per game.
