Haywood Highsmith

Haywood Highsmith has taken an unconventional path to reach the NBA. Unlike most NBA players who are one-and-done college stars or highly touted draft prospects, Highsmith went undrafted out of Wheeling University in 2018. However, through hard work and determination, Highsmith has earned a roster spot on the Miami Heat.

Highsmith grew up in Baltimore, Maryland where he first started playing basketball at Archbishop Curley High School. He became a standout prep player, but garnered little recruiting attention from Division I college programs. Instead, Highsmith played college basketball at Wheeling University, a Division II school in West Virginia.

Over his four-year college career, Highsmith elevated his game each season. As a senior, he put up incredible numbers, averaging 22 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. This dominant season earned Highsmith Division II All-American honors as well as Mountain East Conference Player of the Year.

Despite his college success, NBA teams still had doubts that the undersized Highsmith could make it as a pro. But he did not let going undrafted deter his NBA dreams. Highsmith signed with the Delaware Blue Coats of the NBA G League and proceeded to improve all aspects of his game over two seasons. His strong play with Blue Coats and a short stint on the Philadelphia 76ers earned Highsmith a multi-year contract with the Miami Heat in 2022. He has since carved out a role in Miami as a versatile, defensive-minded bench player.

Highsmith's journey to the NBA shows how self-belief and relentlessly working on one's craft can help overcome long odds. The Miami Heat have signed him for the next three years, proving they believe Highsmith's bright future is just beginning.
