Jalen Rasheed Smith, known as "Stix," is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Indiana Pacers. He is a backup option for the center/power forward spot for the Pacers.
Originally from Portsmouth, Virginia, Smith attended Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Maryland, where he won the Gatorade Maryland Boys Basketball Player of the Year twice. As a certified five-star athlete, he continued his basketball journey at the University of Maryland, where he was a First-team All-Big Ten in 2020. Due to his elite defensive skills, he was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team as well.
Eventually, Smith was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the 10th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. His early seasons with the Suns involved adjusting to the pace of the league, which led to initial struggles. However, upon joining the Indiana Pacers, Smith began to find his rhythm and footing.
Under the guidance of coach Rick Carlisle, Smith was utilized predominantly in the low post and given opportunities to play in post-up situations as well as getting great support from an elite playmaking guard in Tyrese Haliburton. Smith averaged 9.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game in 61 games during the 2023/24 NBA season.
