Karl-Anthony Towns

Karl-Anthony Towns popularly known among basketball fans as KAT, is the star center of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Picked first overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, Towns made history by becoming the third-ever Kentucky player to be picked first overall.

Towns has been an excellent basketball athlete since his early days, and by the time he joined St. Joseph High School, he was ready to showcase his potential. His exceptional defense and dominant displays of strength and athleticism on both ends of the floor helped the St. Joseph Falcons to win two state championships in 2012 and 2014.

After graduating from St. Joseph with an exceptional High School career, Towns committed to Kentucky to play under former NBA head coach John Calipari. In one season in college, Towns averaged 10.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and an imposing 2.3 blocks a game. He also led the league in multiple areas of efficiency including true shooting percentage (62), win shares (6.4) blocks percentage (11.5), and more.

By the end of the season, Towns won the SEC Rookie of the Year award and received selections for the 2014-15 All-SEC first team and All-SEC freshman team.

Karl-Anthony Towns Contract History

Towns signed his four-year $25 million rookie contract on July 7, 2015. In this, he received $11.6 million guaranteed for his initial two years, with the rest of the two-year $13 million being a club option.

In July of 2022, KAT signed a whopping four-year $224 million supermax extension contract which will kick in from the 2024/25 season. As per reports, the deal is fully guaranteed with an annual average salary of $55.6 million and comes with a final-year player option.

With the salary cap rising every season, KAT became one of only 12 players in NBA history to sign a $200 million-plus deal, joining the likes of Nikola Jokic, Bradley Beal, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Devin Booker, and Stephen Curry among others.

Once having been expected to leave the Minnesota Timberwolves, KAT has shown commitment and trust towards the team and its decision to build a roster capable of making deep playoff runs.

If the Timberwolves wish to contend in the playoffs, the team collectively needs to work on their offensive efficiency while maintaining consistency on the defensive end. If most players on the roster remain healthy and consistent throughout the season, the Timberwolves might have a legitimate chance of making some noise in the West.
